A recent study in the news recently has shown that talking on the cell phone is even more dangerous than drinking and driving!
What can be done about this incessant need to talk on the cell phone while driving? Didn’t we all get by before this infernal invention?

It’s nice to have a cell phone for emergencies in the car. But to talk on it constantly while driving has been shown to be very, very dangerous!

How can we do for avoiding it or, is there any way for this?

In fact, we can use many services/products such as O2 which are dedicated to ensure motorists aren’t unnecessarily dangerous with their mobile phones when driving. There has been a lot of debate about whether mobile phones and masts are safe. We believe it’s important to.

MouseEnter & MouseLeave

Here we’ll realize such an effect: when the cursor move onto the original image, it turns into another image; when the cursor leave the image field, the second image changes into a third pic. Therefore the MouseEnter & MouseLeave events are needed.

Let’s first put an image into the page, with two mouse events "Image_MouseEnter" and "Image_MouseLeave".

<canvas>

<image Source="roseheart.jpg" Canvas.Left="60" Canvas.Top="70"

MouseEnter="Image_MouseEnter"

MouseLeave="Image_MouseLeave">

</image>

</canvas>

Then complete the two functions in MainPage.xaml.cs.

private void Image_MouseEnter(object sender, MouseEventArgs e)

{

}

private void Image_MouseLeave(object sender, MouseEventArgs e)

{

Image img = sender as Image;

img.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri("rose.jpg", UriKind.RelativeOrAbsolute));

}

Read the code above, the function Image_MouseEnter defines that when the mouse move onto roseheart.jpg, the pic will change into fourleaf.jpg. For that the picture format supported by Silverlight 3 is limited, we use BitmapImage to load a new pic of JPEG format, that’s alright too. To load files, like images, we use Uri Class, its constructor is (String, UriKind). For more information you can refer to MSDN. Remember to add a line "using System.Windows.Media.Imaging;" to the head of MainPage.xaml.cs.

So does the function Image_MouseLeave mean and you can get it.

MouseLeftButtonUp & MouseLeftButtonDown

In this sample, we create an image field and a text block. When mouse is left-clicked onto the image, the text change. When the left mouse button is released, the text changes again.

Insert the code below to MainPage.xaml:

<image Source="leaf.jpg" Canvas.Left="450" Canvas.Top="150"

MouseLeftButtonDown="Image_MouseLeftButtonDown"

MouseLeftButtonUp="Image_MouseLeftButtonUp">

</image>

<border BorderBrush="Gold" BorderThickness="4" Canvas.Left="120" Canvas.Top="20">

<textblock x:Name="textBlock" Text="Please click the green leaf!"

Width="500" Height="40"

FontSize="25" Foreground="Blue"/>

</border>

Next add code to MainPage.xaml.cs:

private void Image_MouseLeftButtonDown(object sender, MouseButtonEventArgs e)

}

private void Image_MouseLeftButtonUp(object sender, MouseButtonEventArgs e)

{

textBlock.Foreground = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Purple);

textBlock.FontSize = 25;

textBlock.Text = "Wish you a wonderful Silverlight trip!";

}

MouseMove

We use MouseMove event to show the cursor’s current position. To do this, just add one row into Canvas Control markup:

<canvas MouseMove="Canvas_MouseMove">

</canvas>

To show the position in text, add the code:

}

Run the project, the page shows like the following pic:

Move mouse so that the cursor is on the left picture, the pic changes and the cursor position shows:

When the mouse leaves left pic, click the right one and keep left button not released, you can see both the left pic and the text block’s content change.

Release left mouse button, the text changes again:

By now you are able to manage the mouse event in Silverlight 3. The source code of the three sample has been attached and you can download it as a reference here.

We’ll use lots of controls when creating Silverlight applications. These controls make development more funnier. After a fair familarity of Silverlight, this article will teach you to apply Button control to a simple Silverlight application. The effect can be displayed in the demo(FireFox only).

Of course we need to have already installed Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Web Developer 2008 and deployed Silverlight 3 development environment, as the passage How to deploy the development environment for Silverlight3 says. In this sample I adopt Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition. Are you ready to start? Follow me, go!

First, open VWD, click File -> New Project, a New Project dialog will come out for you to choose what you want to create. Here, we choose Visual C# as the type of project in the left column then Silverlight Application in the right. The project name and its location have been set default value, you can change them if you like.

Then the MainPage.xaml panel shows up. Change the codes as the following pic shows. These codes are between the <Button> and </Button> tag. They define a button named myButton, with its width, height, content and other properties being set.

Press F5 to start debugging. If there is no errors, the project will run, or come out error prompts. This is the page effect when successfully running:

◇Tips: Sometimes one may fail to start by pressing F5 and the program points out that The page cannot be run in debug mode because debugging is not enabled in the Web.config file, and the Silverlight debugging package hasn’t been installed. To solve this problem, one is to press Ctrl + F5 to run without debugging, the other is reinstall the relevant Silverlight 3 Tools. Here is the download address: http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9442B0F2-7465-417A-88F3-5E7B5409E9DD&displaylang=en

Next we’ll add a Click event activated by clicking the button. Just add one row like the pic below:

And then right-click the new row, choose Navigate to Event Handler in the menu.

The MainPage.xaml.cs shows up and you find a blank function called myButton_Click. Add one row of code.

Press F5 to run. You’ll see the effect displayed in the demo at the start of this passage.

Microsoft has published the third version of a series of professional design and Internet application tools combination, calling Expression Studio 3, which contains Expression Design, Expression Blend, and Expression Web and so on. As a full-featured professional design tool, Microsoft Expression Blend can be used to design beautiful and complicated UI for applications based on Microsoft Windows and Silverlight. That means, Blend is a useful and common tool to create WPF applications, including Silverlight, for that Silverlight is a subset of WPF. It allows designers to focus on creating while developers focus on programming. Today we will try to explain what is Microsoft Expression Blend, how it works, which tools it can be with, what it produces, what functions it has and what types of applications it can create.

BorderControl: to create rectangle boundary with its corner can be rounded.

TextBlockControl: to add a text block.

CanvasControl: to arrange the layout.

ToggleButtonControl: to create a button with three states.

ImageControl: to show pictures in the page.

Create a blank Silverlight project, insert the codes in MainPage.xaml

Notice that the default Grid markup are placed by Canvas markup. Canvas Left is the distance from the page’s left side to the border’s left side, similarly so does the Canvas Top mean. ToolTip means that when the cursor moves to the inside of the border, a tip will show up.

Run the project, the page effect is like the following:

Then how about the ToggleButtonControl? You must have found that your media player has such a button. It can switch among three states: start, pause, and end, while most buttons are single-state or two-state. To do this, we use ToggleButtonControl. In fact the process is nearly the same as that of using Button Control, so this may be just a piece of cake to you!

Add codes below in MainPage.xml. Thus we create a ToggleButton named myButton, its original content is ”ToggleButton”. The property IsThreeState is set to be True, then the button can have three different states. If its value is False, it will be equal to a common two-state or single-state button.

ToggleButtonControl has three events: Checked, Indeterminate, and Unchecked, each presents a dependent state.

Add functions dealing with the three events above:

OK, start to run. When you move the cursor to the pink border a prompt string "It’s a pink border" shows up. When you repeatedly click the button its content just switch over between three phrases, presenting three states. See the pic below you’ll know exactly what the Canvas.Left and Canvas.Top is.

What’s more, if you want to add one pic into your page, just add the pic stored in your PC through Solution Explorer by right-click the ClientBin folder, choose to add Existing Item:

Now I have add a pic named scene.jpg.

Then follow the pic to inset the scene.jpg into the page.

Run and the final page effect will be like what the demo shows:Demo

Micorsoft has published its Web IDE installation called "Microsoft Web Platform Installer", which includes the latest Silverlight3 Tools and development environment. But many fresher are still confused about deploying the development environment for Silverlight. As I’ve experienced a week’s terrible deploying, let me share the experience with you to facilitate your trip.

First, download Microsoft Web Platform Installer named wpilauncher.exe. Click the picture below to begin downloading. But it is just a downloader, that is, on-line installation.

Run the wpilauncher.exe and follow the prompts. If you’ve installed VS2008 you can skip this step.

Choose the two options Tools as below.

When setting is OK the installation would show a list of concerned information.

If you prepare to install SQL Server you need to set the password for the SQL user.

Now what you do is to wait.

When successfully installed, comes out the picture following.

Open the VS2008 or Web Developer 2008 you can see Silverlight templates.

At this time the Silverlight background coding environment has been established. For interface design you can setup Expression Blend 3 + SketchFlow.

For off-line you can also turn to Microsoft website to download all required components. But do remember this: all the components including VS must have the same language. For example, if you have setup the Chinese version of VS2008 you should install the Chinese version of Silverlight 3 Tools, and others. Strongly I recommend the English version because it may more convenient. Moreover, it is necessary to setup a series with the same Silverlight version. The last important thing is that your VS2008 must be updated to SP1 before deploying Silverlight. So, you’d better download Visual Studio 2008 with SP1 or Web Developer with SP1 instead of VS2008.

Sometimes one may fail to setup Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Web Developer because the web develop components cannot be installed. If you used to install Office2007 but have uninstalled it now, then it is most possible that the left Office 2007 setup files cause the VS setup failure, for the two are not so compatible with each other, that is a low-end bug for Microsoft products. But don’t worry, just clean up all the left Office setup files and install VS2008 again. You can download Microsoft’s Windows Clean Up wizard to clear. Another method is to remove the original Office 2007 and reinstall it, then setup VS2008.

Wish you a wonderful Silverlight trip!

As a new solution for development of Web front-end application-program, Microsoft Silverlight is one of the main development platforms created by Microsoft’s strategy of Rich Internet Application. Meanwhile it is a link of Microsoft UX strategy, also it is Microsoft’s one attempt (another is WPF) to clearly separate the artistic design from the program developers’ work, but both can cooperate favorably.

At the present time Silverlight has been supported by some major browsers, including IE, Firefox and Safari. Moreover, it is compatible with Mac OS X operating system, Windows Mobile 6.0 and Symbian phones. Meanwhile the open source codes solution, Moonlight, is in support of Linux. Here is an instance of displaying butterflies pictures by Silverlight 1.0. Easily you can find that the interface is so nice.

Silverlight is a subset of WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation); also it is XAML’s subset. Equipped with vector-based drawing and the support of multimedia and graphic display, developers can use declarating development to expand Silverlight application. What’s more, the characteristics of declarating development make it able to integrate with design tools. Thus Microsoft especially develops Microsoft Expression Blend tools for designers who use Silverlight and WPF. The picture following shows a hardrock homepage designed with Silverlight 2.0.

Another example is a casual game created by using Silverlight 2.0. The interface looks really attractive.

Silverlight backs up streaming media, especially for Windows Media and sound effect stream such as MP3, enabling enterprises to use Silverlight to create multimedia applications. Silverlight2.0’s Deep Zoom technology allows large pictures to display at the front end by the browsing form of downloading fragments. This technology has been adopted by Taipei Palace Museum, and developed Riverside Scene at the Pure Moon Festival’s Silverlight edition. To know more effects about Silverlight, you can enter the Taipei Palace Museum website to enjoy the great picture. Notice that the page will hint that you should install Silverlight plug-in first.

Currently Silverlight is always regarded as the web technology to compete with Adobe Flash.
