    MouseLeftButtonDown, MouseLeftButtonUp, MouseMove, and MouseWheel. These mouse events use MouseButtonEventArgs and MouseEventArgs as parameters to catch events then active related behaviour. Through the passage we’ll learn to manage five of these events above. Please prepare some nice pictures and then let’s start to practise three samples with VWD or Visual Studio 2008.

    MouseEnter & MouseLeave

    Here we’ll realize such an effect: when the cursor move onto the original image, it turns into another image; when the cursor leave the image field, the second image changes into a third pic. Therefore the MouseEnter & MouseLeave events are needed.

    Let’s first put an image into the page, with two mouse events "Image_MouseEnter" and "Image_MouseLeave".

    Read the code above, the function Image_MouseEnter defines that when the mouse move onto roseheart.jpg, the pic will change into fourleaf.jpg. For that the picture format supported by Silverlight 3 is limited, we use BitmapImage to load a new pic of JPEG format, that’s alright too. To load files, like images, we use Uri Class, its constructor is (String, UriKind). For more information you can refer to MSDN. Remember to add a line "using System.Windows.Media.Imaging;" to the head of MainPage.xaml.cs.

    So does the function Image_MouseLeave mean and you can get it.

    MouseLeftButtonUp & MouseLeftButtonDown

    In this sample, we create an image field and a text block. When mouse is left-clicked onto the image, the text change. When the left mouse button is released, the text changes again.

    Of course we need to have already installed Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Web Developer 2008 and deployed Silverlight 3 development environment, as the passage How to deploy the development environment for Silverlight3 says. In this sample I adopt Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition. Are you ready to start? Follow me, go!

    First, open VWD, click File -> New Project, a New Project dialog will come out for you to choose what you want to create. Here, we choose Visual C# as the type of project in the left column then Silverlight Application in the right. The project name and its location have been set default value, you can change them if you like.

    Then the MainPage.xaml panel shows up. Change the codes as the following pic shows. These codes are between the <Button> and </Button> tag. They define a button named myButton, with its width, height, content and other properties being set.

    Press F5 to start debugging. If there is no errors, the project will run, or come out error prompts. This is the page effect when successfully running:

    ◇Tips: Sometimes one may fail to start by pressing F5 and the program points out that The page cannot be run in debug mode because debugging is not enabled in the Web.config file, and the Silverlight debugging package hasn’t been installed. To solve this problem, one is to press Ctrl + F5 to run without debugging, the other is reinstall the relevant Silverlight 3 Tools. That means, Blend is a useful and common tool to create WPF applications, including Silverlight, for that Silverlight is a subset of WPF. It allows designers to focus on creating while developers focus on programming. Today we will try to explain what is Microsoft Expression Blend, how it works, which tools it can be with, what it produces, what functions it has and what types of applications it can create.

    How Expression Blend works

    Expression Blend enables users to draw shapes, paths and controls, then change their appearances and behaviors, therefore design applications intuitively. Not only can users import images, videos & audios but also deal with 3D objects in Windows applications.

    Besides, users can create Storyboards, which show dynamic viewable and audio elements. Users can decide whether these Storyboards can be activated when users communicate with applications. That seems to be very similar to Adobe Flash. In fact Silverlight is equal to Flash but the former may be more powerful.

    When managing applications, the user can hide his files by using codes being treated, or define control files to update his project at any moment.

    Other tools used combining with Expression Blend

    With Expression Blend, you can:

    Import pictures and XAML sources made in Microsoft Expression Design in Blend projects;

    Import Silverlight media projects created in Expression Encoder and change concerned parts;

    Import Silverlight to Microsoft Expression Web to add more Web contents or issue websites;

    Perfectly do coding work in Visual Studio 2008 independently, and arrange applications with deployment tools in VS2008.

    What Expression Blend produces

    Blend will build WPF applications, meaning that the design project is showing by XAML. As HTML is the markup language of Web application, XAML is that of WPF. In addition Expression produces Silverlight projects, remember that Silverlight is a subset of WPF.

    Information inquiry terminal, which run for clients to get information, search product content and check in at airport;

Though they are really easy to use as that of HTML or Frontpage, as fresher we still need to know some basic usages of them. The top-left one applies BorderControl and TextBlockControl while the bottom-left one applies ToggleControl. And the right one is made with ImageControl. In this case we’ll use VWD2008 Expression with SP1 + Silverlight 3 Tools, and we’ll step by step get these controls listed below realized in your page:

    BorderControl: to create rectangle boundary with its corner can be rounded.

    TextBlockControl: to add a text block.

    CanvasControl: to arrange the layout.

    ToggleButtonControl: to create a button with three states.

    ImageControl: to show pictures in the page.

    Create a blank Silverlight project, insert the codes in MainPage.xaml

    Notice that the default Grid markup are placed by Canvas markup. Canvas Left is the distance from the page’s left side to the border’s left side, similarly so does the Canvas Top mean. ToolTip means that when the cursor moves to the inside of the border, a tip will show up.

    Run the project, the page effect is like the following:

    Then how about the ToggleButtonControl? You must have found that your media player has such a button. It can switch among three states: start, pause, and end, while most buttons are single-state or two-state. To do this, we use ToggleButtonControl. In fact the process is nearly the same as that of using Button Control, so this may be just a piece of cake to you!

    Add codes below in MainPage.xml. Thus we create a ToggleButton named myButton, its original content is ”ToggleButton”. The property IsThreeState is set to be True, then the button can have three different states. If its value is False, it will be equal to a common two-state or single-state button.

    ToggleButtonControl has three events: Checked, Indeterminate, and Unchecked, each presents a dependent state.

    Add functions dealing with the three events above:

    OK, start to run. When you move the cursor to the pink border a prompt string "It’s a pink border" shows up. When you repeatedly click the button its content just switch over between three phrases, presenting three states. See the pic below you’ll know exactly what the Canvas.Left and Canvas.Top is.

    What’s more, if you want to add one pic into your page, just add the pic stored in your PC through Solution Explorer by right-click the ClientBin folder, choose to add Existing Item:

    At this time the Silverlight background coding environment has been established. For interface design you can setup Expression Blend 3 + SketchFlow.

    For off-line you can also turn to Microsoft website to download all required components. But do remember this: all the components including VS must have the same language. For example, if you have setup the Chinese version of VS2008 you should install the Chinese version of Silverlight 3 Tools, and others. Strongly I recommend the English version because it may more convenient. Moreover, it is necessary to setup a series with the same Silverlight version. The last important thing is that your VS2008 must be updated to SP1 before deploying Silverlight. So, you’d better download Visual Studio 2008 with SP1 or Web Developer with SP1 instead of VS2008.

    Sometimes one may fail to setup Visual Studio 2008 or Visual Web Developer because the web develop components cannot be installed. If you used to install Office2007 but have uninstalled it now, then it is most possible that the left Office 2007 setup files cause the VS setup failure, for the two are not so compatible with each other, that is a low-end bug for Microsoft products. But don’t worry, just clean up all the left Office setup files and install VS2008 again. You can download Microsoft’s Windows Clean Up wizard to clear. Another method is to remove the original Office 2007 and reinstall it, then setup VS2008.
